Childrenopolis is a fantasy dramedy movie/musical about a utopian community of children of many colors who live in harmony in the hollow of the earth, but know about the hatred, war, and pollution infecting the earth’s outer shell. A select few make a goodwill ambassador pilgrimage to detoxify the earth as we know it.

The Cat and the Butterfly

The Venue Fine Art and Gifts hosts many wonderful community events in Bloomington, Indiana, including one they call Ekphrasis, where they invite poets to choose a painting in their art gallery, write a poem inspired by that painting, and then recite the poem in front of an audience in the gallery.

Thankfully I was invited to participate in Ekphrasis, and I chose this painting by Don Geyra, entitled “Tootsie and Monarch”, and called my poem “The Cat and the Butterly”. I feel that the cat in Don’s painting is perched, and ready to pounce on the butterfly. I have observed cats playing with and torturing butterflies, mice, birds, and even a snake. So I let my imagination run wild and wrote this poem.

People seemed entertained by my reading of the poem at Ekphrasis, so I asked my niece Zoë Reed to film me performing it. Thanks to Zoë for filming and editing, thanks to David, Michelle, and Gabriel at The Venue for inviting me to Ekphrasis, and thanks to Don Geyra for such a beautiful and evocative painting.

Read the poem here.

CHILDREN’S BOOKS

Cleo the Cow

Tim’s father Ron Reed named his cows after his relatives. Just as his aunt Cleo outlived all of her relatives, Cleo the cow outlived all of his Dad’s cows, and the 1500 pound Hereford became his favorite. Ron entertained many people with story of Cleo, her unfortunate death, and the darkly comedic aftermath.  Tim has retold this story in a children’s book. Click here to read the full story.

PIANO & VOICE TEACHING

Tim took on his first piano student when he was 17, helping his Mom’s colleague’s daughter, Elizabeth Haefele with playing Rachmaninoff’s famous C# Minor Prelude. Since then, he has worked with about one thousand piano and voice students in Columbus, Cleveland, and Athens, Ohio; Boston, Massachusetts; and Bloomington, Indiana. In this context, he is proud to pass on the traditions of some of the greatest pianists and singers of the 20th century. His principal piano teachers include Kurtz Helber, student of George Haddad; Nancy Bachus, student of Eugene List and Ozan Marsh; and Richard Syracuse, student of Rosina Lhevinne and Rosalyn Tureck. His principal voice teachers include Ira Zook, student of Richard Miller; and Michael Belnap, student of Luciano Pavarotti. In addition to these formative experiences, Timothy has enriched his musicality through jazz piano studies with Russell Hoffman, and gospel piano and singing studies with Ethel Caffie-Austin.  Many of his students have gone on to major in music or theater in college, and work professionally in the entertainment field. Three of his young sopranos have won first prize in the Indiana state finals of the National Federation of Music Clubs Vocal Solo Art Song Competition.

The recital is free and open to the public! Come hear Tim’s piano and voice students perform. They range in age from 5-21. Here are some of the pieces on the program: Rachmaninoff's Moment Musicaux, Opus 16 #6, Beethoven's Für Elise, Rihanna's Stay, My OCD, Super Cool from The Lego Movie, Danny Boy, On the Street Where You Live from My Fair Lady, Chopin's Raindrop Prelude, When I'm Sixty Four, Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody, Chopin’s Prelude in E Minor, Hedwig’s Theme, Ed Sheeran’s Perfect, Grieg’s Waltz in A Minor, and Think of Me from Phantom of the Opera.
