Timothy Reed - Brief Teaching Bio
Tim started teaching piano when he was 17. His mother had a colleague in Columbus, Ohio, who's daughter was working on Rachmaninoff's famous C# Minor Prelude, so he taught her until he moved to Cleveland, Ohio. Since then he's taught mostly privately nearly 1500 piano and voice students, in Columbus, Cleveland, Logan, and Athens, Ohio; Boston, Massachusetts, Limassol, Cyprus, and Bloomington, Indiana. In August 2024 Tim moved to Rancho Mirage, California to promote the making of a movie/musical he's co-written called Childrenopolis. Over the years Tim has given lessons in his teaching studios and a few music schools, but for the most part he's taught in people's homes. He's now offering piano and voice lessons in homes in Greater Palm Springs!
He's now offering piano and voice lessons in homes in Greater Palm Springs! Give Tim a call at (812) 322-7187 or send an Email to timothyreedmusic@gmail.com for more info! Here's a highlight reel of one of Tim's student recitals in Bloomington, Indiana: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=11vM_IUDRCg
Tim's principal piano teachers were Kurtz Helber, student of George Haddad; Nancy Bachus, student of Eugene List, Ozan Marsh, and Brooks Smith; and Richard Syracuse, student of Rosina Lhevinne and Rosalyn Tureck. Tim's principal voice teachers were Ira Zook, student of Richard Miller, and Michael Belnap, student of Luciano Pavarotti. Michael was the only voice teacher on the faculty at Indiana University School of Music at that time who knew how to teach and perform classical/opera singing, musical theater, and pop singing styles. Tim also did a bit of jazz piano with Russell Hoffman in Boston, MA, and gospel piano and voice with Ethel Caffie-Austin, in Charleston, West Virginia.
Tim was a music and liberal arts major at Cleveland State University, Ohio University, and Indiana University School of Music (now the Jacobs School of Music).
Many of his students have gone on to major in music in college, and work professionally in music. Three of his young sopranos won 1st prize in the Indiana State Finals of the National Federation of Music Clubs Vocal Solo Art Song Competition in Indiana. But mostly he's worked with kids and some adults who enjoy music as a hobby. He's taught all levels, beginners to advanced, in both piano and voice.
Tim's been blessed beyond measure with wonderful, high-level teachers, and has done his best to pass on what he learned from them, combined with what he's learned on his own from years of teaching and performing classical, musical theater, pop, and rock.
“Couldn’t have done it without my amazing voice teacher!!!”
“Thorin just came and played his festival piece for me. I am so deeply moved!! Thank you for being a brilliant teacher!”
“Dear Tim,
Thank you so much for a year of music lessons. It is hard to believe that it was about 12 months ago that I started with you. I feel like I have learned a great deal in one year.
The recital is a good thing to do. It is a great experience and it forces me to learn the pieces well. I hope to start up lessons again in early July.”
“We wanted to express our sincere appreciation to Tim for everything he has done.
His friendship, guidance, instruction, and patience (especially patience) have always made this
experience a strong and positive one. Ricardo has benefitted many times over from the recitals, and in preparing and competing...
Thanks for everything you do so well, Tim”
“We are so grateful for your exceptional teaching to all my three kids! They have gained knowledge, confidence and they had fun with music. You have given them such a precious and powerful gift, that is love for music, which will accompany them through happy and sad times of their lives. Giving them joy through the good times, and strength during the not so good times. That was our goal for them to study music. You have helped them to achieve this. Thank you, Tim!”
“You are doing a super job-which doesn’t surprise me. You are introducing musical and expressive values from the first. Especially noticeable is the control of tone-this is just as much ‘technique’ as is velocity and fluency, but many people fail to recognize this. These students are fortunate to have you as their teacher. I’m sure you will offer this to others wherever you are. Even if you become totally engrossed in a singing career, I hope you will keep a few talented piano students. All good wishes!”
“Hello! I just wanted to tell you how much I appreciate you, My son has absolutely fallen in love with the piano and he counts down the days until it’s lesson day. He has a few things going on and he’s never really found something he’s REALLY loved and this has been incredible. He was at Riley most of the day one day last week and every doctor he saw asked about his favorite thing and he said piano playing every single time. I just can’t thank you enough for the time you put in with him and your kindness and PLEASE know you are making such a huge difference for him and you are very much an answered prayer for us.”
“Tim, Thank you for being my piano teacher!”
Some notes from students just before I moved from Indiana to California in fall of 2024:

Thanks for coming today and helping us perform.
But most of all, thanks for getting us excited about music.”
“Thank you so much Tim! I hope the move goes smoothly and your work on the musical continues to go well.
Nobody can replace how great of a teacher you were to me for over a decade, I hope California treats you well!!”
